How to Download WordPress on Linux

WordPress is a popular content management system that is used to create and manage websites. It can be easily installed on a Linux system. In this article, we will guide you through the process of downloading WordPress on Linux.

Prerequisites

Before getting started with the WordPress installation, you need to make sure that your Linux system meets the following prerequisites:

  • Apache web server
  • PHP
  • MySQL or MariaDB database server

Step 1 – Downloading WordPress

To download WordPress, first, visit the official WordPress website at https://wordpress.org/download/. You should see a download button on the page.

Click on the download button, and the latest version of WordPress will start downloading on your Linux system.

Step 2 – Extracting the WordPress Archive

Once the download is complete, navigate to the directory where the WordPress archive was downloaded. You can use the following command to extract the archive:

sudo tar -xvzf wordpress-<version>.tar.gz -C /var/www/html/

Make sure to replace with the version number of WordPress that you downloaded.

This command will extract the WordPress files to /var/www/html/ directory.

Step 3 – Creating the WordPress Database

Before installing WordPress, you need to create a new database. To create a new database, open the MySQL or MariaDB shell using the following command:

sudo mysql -u root -p

Enter the root password when prompted.

Next, you can create a new database using the following command:

CREATE DATABASE wordpress;

Make sure to replace "wordpress" with your preferred database name.

Step 4 – Configuring WordPress

To configure WordPress, you need to create a wp-config.php file. Navigate to the WordPress directory using the following command:

cd /var/www/html/wordpress/

Then, copy the sample configuration file to wp-config.php using the following command:

sudo cp wp-config-sample.php wp-config.php

Next, open the wp-config.php file using a text editor:

sudo nano /var/www/html/wordpress/wp-config.php

In the file, update the database details with the database that you created earlier:

define('DB_NAME', 'wordpress'); define('DB_USER', 'db_user'); define('DB_PASSWORD', 'db_password'); define('DB_HOST', 'localhost');

Make sure to replace "dbuser" and "dbpassword" with the MySQL or MariaDB username and password that you created earlier.

Step 5 – Installing WordPress

Once you have configured WordPress, you are now ready to install it. Open your web browser and navigate to http://localhost/wordpress/. The WordPress setup wizard will open.

Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation process. Make sure to use the database details that you configured in the wp-config.php file.

After completing the installation process, you can log in to your WordPress dashboard using the administrator username and password that you specified during the installation.

Congratulations! You have successfully downloaded WordPress on your Linux system. Now, you can create and manage your website using WordPress.
